How to Record a Microsoft Teams Meeting Locally

You want the recording of a Teams meeting on your own machine. Teams has a different plan: every recording it makes goes to Microsoft's cloud, into OneDrive or SharePoint, under your organisation's tenant. A local file on your Mac is simply not on the menu.
For plenty of teams that is fine, even preferable: the recording becomes an organisational record with retention rules and admin oversight. But if you are a consultant on a client's call, an external adviser, or anyone whose conversation should not become tenant data by default, the built-in recorder answers a different question than the one you are asking.
This guide explains what Teams recording actually does, why a local recording is sometimes the right call, and how to record a Microsoft Teams meeting locally on a Mac.
Can Microsoft Teams record a meeting locally?
No. Teams records to the cloud only. Per Microsoft's documentation, a Teams recording:
Is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, depending on the meeting type; there is no save-to-device option
Requires a paid Microsoft 365 licence (Business, Enterprise E1/E3/E5, and similar)
Must be enabled by an IT administrator for both the organiser and the person recording
Cannot be started by guests or external participants at all
Transcription follows the same pattern: it is a separate toggle in the same menu, processed in the same cloud, governed by the same tenant.
Notice who is left out. If you join someone else's Teams meeting as an external participant, the recorder is not yours to press, and whatever gets recorded lives in their tenant, not with you.
What happens when Teams records
For completeness, the native flow on an eligible, admin-enabled account:
In the meeting, open the meeting controls and select Record and transcribe → Start recording. Participants are notified that recording is on.
Recording continues even if the organiser leaves, and stops when everyone leaves or someone stops it.
The file lands in the recorder's OneDrive (or SharePoint for channel meetings), with permissions following the meeting's membership.
Retention, sharing, and deletion follow the organisation's policies, not the individual's preference.
That last line is the point of the design. The recording belongs to the tenant. Admins can govern it, compliance can search it, retention rules decide how long it exists.
Why record locally instead
Three situations where a local recording is the honest requirement rather than a workaround.
A coaching session, a client consultation, or an interview can belong to the professional in the conversation. The obligation to protect it sits with you, and parking it in someone's corporate tenant hands that obligation away.
You are the guest. External participants cannot record in Teams at all. A local recorder on your own Mac is the only way to leave the call with your own notes.
You need it to work everywhere. A local recorder does not care whether the meeting is on Teams, Zoom, or Meet, or whether it is a meeting at all. One workflow covers the lot.
The consent rule does not change with the method: ask before recording, every time. What changes is your answer to "where does this recording go?" With a local recorder, the answer is one sentence: it stays on this Mac.
