How to Record and Transcribe a Google Meet Call

A client call on Google Meet produces two things: the conversation, and the work of remembering it. Most people solve the second half with a cloud service, and for confidential work that is where the trouble starts.
Google Meet can transcribe meetings on its own, if your organisation pays for the right Workspace edition. The transcript lands in the organiser's Google Drive, and an email with the link goes out to hosts and, in smaller meetings, to every invitee from the organisation. Convenient for a team standup. Does Google Meet transcribe meetings?
Yes, on paid Workspace plans. Meet's transcripts feature writes the spoken conversation into a document saved to the meeting organiser's Google Drive. According to Google's documentation, you need:
A paid Workspace edition: Business Standard or Plus, Enterprise, Education Plus, or Workspace Individual
Transcription started from inside the meeting: Meeting tools → Transcribe → Start transcription
The transcript then saves to the organiser's Drive, in a Google Meet folder
Three details worth knowing before you rely on it. The free consumer version of Meet has no transcripts. Transcription covers eight languages (English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish). And recording is a separate feature: the transcript captures speech only, so if you want the video or the chat, you start a recording as well, which also lives in Drive.
How to turn on Meet's built-in transcription
If cloud processing fits your meeting, the native route is quick:
Join the meeting from a Workspace account on an eligible edition.
Open Meeting tools in the bottom toolbar and select Transcribe → Start transcription. Everyone in the meeting sees that transcription is on.
End the meeting. The transcript is generated and saved to the organiser's Google Drive.
Watch your inbox: hosts, co-hosts, and whoever started the transcription get an email link. In meetings with up to 200 invitees from the organisation, every invitee can access the transcript.
That last point is the one to sit with. The distribution is automatic. If the conversation was sensitive, the transcript's audience is decided by the invite list and the organiser's Drive permissions, not by you.
The catch: the conversation becomes a Drive file
For internal meetings inside one organisation, a transcript in Drive is exactly where people expect it. For confidential professional conversations, it means three things.
The spoken content of the call now exists as a searchable document on Google's servers, under the organiser's account. Its access list was set automatically. And if you are the guest rather than the organiser, a client, a patient, an external adviser, you may have no control over any of it.

How to record and transcribe a Google Meet call on your Mac
